Sorry, I mean at grub prompt find the partition by
grub> search -f /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-7-generic

then knowing the 'x' in /dev/sdax,

search --set=root -f /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-7-generic
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-7-generic root=/dev/sdax ro single
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-7-generic
boot
