"Stay alive" utility for Ubuntu?

In your specific example (movie playing), specific applications would 
work fine with it. For example, the default Ubuntu media player (totem) 
has an option to disable screensaver when playing (Edit -> Preferences 
-> Display -> Disable screensaver). Another common player that should 
also work is VLC (which is enabled by default - if not you can go to 
Tools -> Preferences -> "Show settings -> All" -> Video -> check 
"disable screensaver").
