changing the Visual Effects from None to Normal disabled X

I just try changing my Appearance Preferences ->  Visual Effects
settings from None to Normal. And upon excepting the change X cashed and
continue to crash every time I login. What commands can I run from a ssh
or tty command line to reset my Visual Effects settings back to None? 

I'm running 10.04 64-bit.
