Just do that from a command line and use the 'm' key to toggle
mute/unmute your input/output sources. If you have multiple sound
sources, like an internal sound card, a USB stereo head phone with a
mike and a webcam with a mike, using the "F6" key will allow you to
switch among them in order to set them. I usually use 80 to 85% volume
settings ...use the arrow keys to navigate and increase / decrease the
settings.
After all appears to be set, hit 'esc' to leave alsamixer, then open
"pavucontrol" in the terminal window. Check all of the tabs to see what
is turned on / off. Set it the way you want it. Use your favorite player
to play something, you should hear your sounds now. If you don't, do you
have your speakers plugged in and the volume turned up? <chuckles>
