Some/many issues can be quite complicated... I went through some rather
difficult issues with my laptop:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/477154
[When headphones are plugged in, the speaker does not get muted
automatically. ]
which eventually lead to me filing my own bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/587388
[[HP G60]0x103c360b Conexant CX20583 (Pebble HSF) Internal mic not
functional]

David Henningsson was kind enough to take on the bug & provide a fix.

The problem is that there are many different types of codecs, sound
devices, applications etc., so it can be difficult to troubleshoot.
Sometimes generic procedures work (as in Nathan's case), other times you
need to dig down the the device bits
(http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Help_To_Debug -
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Help_To_Debug_Intel_HDA etc).
