backlight control inadequate on Samsung N220 netbook with 10.10

I mostly said it in the subject line but also...

It's a Samsung N220 that came with Windows 7 starter edition and
Phoenix instant-on Linux. The Linux was not worth having so I shrank
the W7 partition to 40G leavin most of the rest of 250G for me to put
Ubunto 10.10 on. There was an issue with the wireless at first but
updates have corrected that. The only reason I'm keeping Windows
around is that I can not adjust the backlight in U10 to be usable in
daylight. Evening interior room light no problem. I have tinkered with
power saving options to no avail. I'm quite prepared to trade battery
charge duration for intensity but don't know how to set about any
further changes.

Any suggestions welcome, TIA.

Dave
