flashplugin fails

I have a machine that I have been using for a long time without upgrading.
About a month ago the flash plugin for Firefox started failing completely.
Anyplace flash content should show up, I just get a message saying flash
has crashed.

I have started down the upgrade path, and as of this morning, the machine
is up to date on Lucid. But the problem with flash persists.

I have a vague recollection of having installed a Firefox add in of some
kind that was supposed to allow me to capture flash content locally. I
suspect that flash started failing just after I installed this, but I can't
seem to find out where to de-install this.

Any suggestions on getting flash working again?
