It should be there, already installed. Just open a terminal and type
alsamixer.
It should pop up ...it's a ascii/text looking application, so don't try
to adjust your set. We control the horizontal and the vertical. There is
also a gui version, but old timers like it down and dirty. Use the arrow
keys to navigate. The M key mutes and unmutes each column. If what you
want to use shows it's muted, (MM) hit the M key, it should change to
(00), then use the up-arrow to raise the sound level to 80%, which is
the setting I use. Use the F6 key to switch between each audio device
you have, ...like from your built in sound chips to your USB headset,
the mike on your webcam, etc. You'll get the hang of it.
Or, what you are trying to use isn't recognized at all. Say your USB
headset isn't there. Then type lsusb, in a terminal window, to list all
of your usb devices. If it still isn't there, ...you're in trouble and
need more help. If it's a pci device, then lspci should show it.
