how does USB stick automounting work in Maverick?

I'm trying to turn off automounting in Maverick, to no avail.

Ideally, I'd like to control it over /etc/fstab, but the noauto option doesn't do the trick.

I've tried gconf-editor->apps->nautilus->preferences->... and the three options there, plus nautilus->preferences->media->... the options there.

Nothing does the job.

What tool/pgm/facility/product/whatever manages USB automounting in Ubuntu Maverick?
