Jack, strange, I did try on one of my many kernels and the abi file is  
also removed.
Just to be sure, remove kernels on the OS that you're booted on.
That is, be on 10.04 to remove kernels (and files) on 10.04.
Try again? refresh your file manager? (nautilus?)
sudo apt-get remove --purge 2.6.32-24-*

or just plain......
sudo apt-get remove abi-2.6.32-24-generic
at /boot.

Anyway, I won't lose sleep over this unless you have very little disk  
space left (unlikely) or you've set /boot to be very small (that's why I  
don't set separate /boot partition - and have LVM?  why?) - so, don't  
worry too much over it.
