Thanks Alan, I suppose it works that way.
What I did before sending you earlier message was I removed kmail  which 
is part of kubuntu-desktop (I'm using kubuntu) and then
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop^
but that did not reinstall back kmail
(but neither did 'apt-get install --reinstall kubuntu-desktop')
and had to 'apt-get install kmail' to get it back.

So, I am still not totally clear.
