If something isn't a directory, what could it possibly be? A file perhaps? :)

sudo nano /etc/fstab

The above line will put you in a text editor in a terminal.

Alternatively if you're in Ubuntu GNOME desktop:-

ALT+F2, then
gksudo gedit /etc/fstab
