installation snapshot and restore

Just for the record
I ended up using the 'partimage' application from the 'Gparted Live CD'.
It's pretty neat:
a) boot with Gparted live CD
b) mount some partition, other than the one to be backed up, to store
the backup file
c) open a root terminal
d) run 'partimage', fill in the blanks and go !!
