I use NVidia video cards so I can't answer your question directly.
I would check with Synaptic to find out which driver you have and make
sure it is the right one.
If the L&G in the repository is not the right one, you can file a bug
at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu.
You might also check with ATI, as I said - sometimes there is a
discrepancy between the Ubuntu repositories and the manufacturer's
drivers. I run NVidia's proprietary driver version 260.19.12 because
when I tried to use the one in the Ubuntu repository (same version),
it didn't work right with my machines. Others have not had this
problem. YMMV.
