Both AMD and Intel CPU's can still overheat, even with thermal 
throttling.  The CPU might just be more sensitive to high temp than 
normal to begin with, or keeping a CPU running full tilt at it's max 
temperature for a long time can damage it such that it becomes more 
temperature sensitive.  Don't really think any of this is the issue in 
this case, however.
