Hmmm, no mention of pavucontrol.

Isn't pavucontrol the ants pants of all audio woes?

Aaah! I bet the answer may lie in the alsamixergui control setting 
called S/PFID, especially if it has RAW in the setting name. I am more 
than sure that I am wrong but...what the heck.. Live dangerously, i 
always say... :-) .
