I know and use Dia extensively, it's excellent, but it's nowhere near
what I'm after for these flow diagrams. I want something much closer to
editing a Wiki where getting the information in is the main object of
the exercise and prettiness and layout are secondary.

If I used Dia I would be lost in the intricacies of moving boxes around
and attaching text to boxes/lines, etc.

I could *almost* get what I want with simple text:-

Start here This is the start
    via
    via
via [A bit of text about via]
    via
    via
The next Some description about 'the next'
    v2
    v2
    v2
    v2
  The End

See what I mean (will only work sensibly in fixed width typefaces)?
Just adding some simple lines and boxes to the above is all I need
really. The real thing I need is a way to turn that row of 'via' into
a line with a description, apart from that just lumps of text is nearly
good enough.
