The drive file straight from nVidia plays merry hell with an Ubuntu
install as it uses it's own directory scheme of things, like where to
write the lib files. I agree that the repo lags behind, but using the
nVidia supplied version can become a liability at times. Old crufty
experienced users can get by with it. Newbies may have problems and end
up in tears.
With Fedora I had to use the nVidia .run file, but there was no other
Fedora supplied nVidia driver in the way. Jockey has worked for me
always, but there has been times I had to apply it more than once,
before it would announce that the driver was loaded and running. There
has been more than one occasion when I had to make additional links, by
hand, for the libGL libraries, with the nVidia version, so I wouldn't
use that route unless it was the ~last ditch~ effort to resolve a
problem. Anything short of that, I'd stick with the repos until any
other possibility has been exhausted. The OP hasn't reported back, that
I recall, what the result was from using the nVidia setup app. Ric
