Mate, have restored a borked 11.04 by doing this (I'm sure I'll get
flamed):

sudo apt-get remove libunity4
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Reboot, you'll have ONLY the Gnome2 (Classic) desktop, and you should be
able to "normally" fix your nVidia issues from that point. HTH.
