Best Alternative Operating System To Ubuntu?

Hi this is my first time posting on the list.
I have used Ubuntu for about a year consistently now, I originally used
Desktop edition but moved to the Notebook because I use a laptop, when I got
Unity I was severely disappointed, I think that Unity was not at all the
right way to go and it will greatly hinder Ubuntu's ability to be adapted by
non Linux users, due primarily to the abandonment of the menu driven
interface in favor of the search. Now I am assuming this was done partially
in response to Microsoft's apparent success in 7 with the search driven
interface but I don't think this is the right way to go if there is a desire
to spread Linux here is my reasoning.
Many people have used Windows for years (unfortunately)
So people are familiar and know most of the applications they need to on
Windows as such a search is easier than the old menu driven interface.
On Linux however new people migrate to it and by consequence have no clue
whatsoever about the type of application on Ubuntu much less what they are
called. So when people get to Ubuntu they quickly find themselves unable to
do anything because they don't know what they are looking for with a search
driven interface.
Now with a menu driven interface everything is pretty clearly labeled and
within a reasonable time you can find anything at all your are looking for.
That's why I think Ubuntu should consider returning to a menu driven
interface rather than a search driven one.
