Thanks for the replies.
Doug,
No the courses are on Windows applications. Simple courses about the use 
of the OS, mail, etc. as well as advanced courses on OpenOffice, 
Photoshop, Video apps, etc. To be sure that each user has his own 
environment during the whole course, each got his own virtual system 
(either XP, Vista or seven) which is stored on a central server.

Thanks for the info, that was what I was looking for.
Of course I can run the 32-bit version as I do now as a guest under 
Vmware Player and my impression is that it is much faster than standard 
ubuntu. One of the reasons for a 64-bit version is that I would try it 
on my workstation (AMD Phenom II 4-core 6GB): As well for the memory use 
as the hardware virtualization options a 64-bit version would be nice.
But I will look in the fora and the mailing lists.
