Did you get to 11.04 from 8.04 or earlier without any fresh (new) 
install? Please see if there is a /boot/grub/grub.cfg there and print 
this out if there is.

And are you willing to convert your grub-legacy to grub2?
I am getting 'rusty' with grub-legacy now.
