11.04 freezes and I'm in recovery mode

Glad to hear it.

So after that little procedure, it works fine even in normal mode; as in no
need to go to the recovery mode again??

If so, then there's a far easier way to do it:
Go To *Keyboard->Layouts->Options->Key Sequence to kill the X server,* and
activate the *Ctrl-Alt-Backspace* option.
Now whenever it hangs, you can always press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, and it will
restart X. Mind you, all open applications will be forced quit too!!!
