I have previously had issues with files (not pdf) in my case not using
the correct app to run the file when trying to open it directly within
FF downloads window. It does not always seem to use the same settings
for determining the app to use as Nautilus does. I guess that your
problem is the same, it is not using the correct app to open the pdf
file and that app is complaining because it is not expecting a pdf
file. So I think the question that needs answering is how does FF
decide what app to use when opening a file in downloads window.
As a matter of interest what happens if you click on a pdf link in the
browser itself? Does it give the option of opening with the correct
application?
It might be worth looking in FF Edit > Preferences > Applications and
see what it has for pdf.
I cannot investigate it myself as my problem has gone away following
an upgrade I think.
