I'm pretty sure the desktop looks like what on http://unity.ubuntu.com/.
By telling you that I didn't change anything, I should get the
default. I was asking whether Unity is the default.

I ssh to the natty ubuntu machine (where some vncserver sessions are
running) with appropriate port forwarding and I use vncviewer on a
different machine to view the vnc session on the natty Ubuntu. As you
can see, I'm not using the process that you think. So unity may be
irrelevant to the problem. Also see my reply to NoOp.
