Yes? Since we don't have any machines that are older that we can run
legacy (all our hardware is newer and we require x64 for our servers
because of memory) I can't run a simple test to see if removing your
second CDROM would fix this error allowing you to keep your external HD
or what you would need to do to remedy this issue temporarily (other
than rolling back to LTS for now or going to x64 -- read below)

I do know that I ran over to one of our test computers which is x64 and
tested something similar to what you have (2 ROM's, booting from USB
stick/external HD -- both) and it worked like normal.
