Possessed volume control fix?

All,

I have 10.04 LTS and the volume control is driving me crazy.  I have to
chase the slider around with my mouse cursor to finally get control of
it, then it moves again.

What do I have to do to get a normal vertical column control to replace
the one in the panel?
