@ Bob H: It sounds as if you actually succeded in installing but as Tony
points out, your graphic card doesn't support Unity.
At the GDM login screen click on the username. Now look down at the
bottom of the screen and on the bottom panel you will see an area that
shows 'Ubuntu'. Click on that and select 'Ubuntu Classic'. That will put
you into the standard GNOME desktop rather than Unity.
Unfortunately Unity has taken the Vista/Win7 approach in that you can't
run it with older graphic cards. You can install Unity 2D as suggested
by Tony, but personally I'd just stick to standard 'Ubuntu Classic' were
