Ask people, ;)-
That is a personal taste, why did you use Windows earlier? Similarly people
use what they wish, :)-
GUI distros....! Ubuntu is best for starting, its easy to start with, it
would detect most of the hardware by default, speakers, printers,
everything.....So is best. Mint is good, more easier than Ubuntu. Slackware
(as you say) is more typical then Ubuntu. openSUSE is more polished with
KDE and more smooth, but is not as easy as is Ubuntu (I remember I had to
install the stupid drivers for Samsung M1610 printer which Ubuntu detected
by default). Fedora is highly cutting edge but not easier than Ubuntu,
still shows issues with multimedia. Debian is father of Ubuntu and rock
solid but still not good to start with. Arch Linux is more of a technical
user, again, to start with is not good.
You should just go either with Ubuntu (LTS) or with PCLinuxOS, this is my
suggestion.
