I'm afraid I can't help on the brightness issue, as I only have an
iBook and an iMac G5 and I don't run Ubuntu on them. (I prefer OS X on
Macs.)
As for the scrolling thing, though, I think you're just going to have
to get used to that and get in the habit of not leaving one digit on
the trackpad while another digit is trying to do something.
