The right way to upgrade, if you can't make it work with the graphical 
user interface for whatever reason, is to use the server way, as

The upgrade method for desktops and servers is *EXACTLY* the same, the 
only difference for desktops is that you get a fancy graphical shell 
that hides any typing in a terminal window. It is not forbidden to use 
the server method also for desktops, quite the contrary.
