login window disapears after sys update

12.04 isn't exactly standard, ...just yet. Officially it's still Beta 
and prone to breakage. Since nothing seems to work, you might consider 
filing a bug report? I'm following your case just to see what is broken. 
Good luck! Me, I never install a new release until it's into it's first 
re-spin. What you're going through would make me nutz. :) Ric
