I installed kubuntu on a different machine and a VM and it works 
correctly. This seems to indicate something is happening on the test 
machine I'm using, but I don't know what and how to fix it.

kde is not running, lightdm is. I stopped lightdm and started kde 
instead and same result.

I don't have that service.

Video card is:
