Restoring the old gnome desktop

That will add a lot of things for which a normal Ubuntu installation
will already have included software for.  A simple <sudo apt-get
install xfce4> should do it.  That will get only the window manager and
associated dependencies instead of everything and the kitchen sink that
you get with a Xubuntu-desktop installation.
