In the early days of Ubuntu, I used to install SUSE just to use its
monitor tools to set up my screens right, then copy xfree86.conf
across from SUSE to Ubuntu. Easiest way to get it right.
That's without the nightmare of Matrox proprietary drivers. I shudder
at the memory...
