init 1 hangs

I only use "telinit 0" or "telinit 6" on Linux because I've had
problems going to other levels. Furthermore, assuming "telinit 1" has
worked, following up with 'telinit 2" or "telinit 3" has failed
consistently. This ain't Unix any more...

For runlevel 1, I just use 'telinit 6" and choose s-u-m from the grub
menu. It takes longer but it works.
