cannot report error

Just installed 12.10, had some problems with video card drivers.  I'm 
running xfce.

When I login to xfce it says there's an error and prompts for my 
password, then tells me that the password is wrong -- which is odd, since 
I've only the one user and sudo works fine.

I looked through some /var/log/ logs, but nothing popped out.  How do I 
find what's failing?
