I have been where you are now. I haven't tried to use my computer as
a DVD player in quite some time because of problems like these.
On hearing about your problem, I decided to give it a try:
Totem tells me that the some of the software for playing DVDs is not
"officially supported".
I always just use the DVD-player we have attached to the television.
Though, I am NOT arguing you should do the same. Good luck.
