If this is an external drive, it's possible the power supply, or the
interface (usb to drive) board is bad. Or the drive itself is bad.  

The only way to know is to remove the drive and test it, or ship it back to
its maker and let them repair it. 

Hope you had backups. 

Does gparted see it?
