I didn't see your response until just now.

The problem was solved quite easily in the end. In the Package Manager I 
  simply marked it for reinstallation. The Package Manager obviously did 
a better job than did the install process of the Ubuntu Software Centre. 
It worked correctly when next started.

One thing I don't get is your suggestion to try Thunderbird. I'm using 
TB version 2.0.0.22 and cannot see anywhere how to access newsgroups.
Am I behind the times?  Or am I missing something?
Maybe both...  :-)
