Unity is a UI interface built as a plug-in for the Open GL compositing
manager Compiz. The one that creates the wobbly windows and other eye
candy. The rest of the Unity environment (file manager and such) is gtk3
based just like the current Gnome 3 dekstop where the UI is called Gnome
Shell.
