Kubuntu is based off Ubuntu, but that does not at all mean Kubuntu is 
based on GNOME. Kubuntu uses KDE, which has nothing to do with GNOME. 
Ubuntu is the core operating system of all related products (Kubuntu, 
Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Edubuntu, etc). Basically, Kubuntu is based-off of 
Ubuntu, but it does not use GNOME.
