sound broken after update

This might sound crazy, but have you rebooted yet??  Input and output 
devices plugged in before the reboot? I have found that hot-plugging 
audio devices does not always work well. I too tried update to 12.04 
from 11.10 and there was enough bugginess going on that I did a clean 
install. Old config files can get in the way and I sorely lack the 
patience to chase them down, which might be why you're having a problem. 
To my thinking that if 12.04 has a 5 year shelf life, it's better to 
give it a clean slate to start with. My two cents, Ric
