given you post to an ubuntu list, i would assume you mean to run ubuntu
on that platform ... if so, you will need to stick with armv7 based
devices as ubuntu doesnt support older arm arches (like teh
raspberry pi for example) ... preferably you should use a TI chip (omap3
or 4) in your board design, as these are the best supported ones in
ubuntu atm. if you want to look at different HW, take a look at the
boards supported by linaro, while not directly supported in ubuntu they
are very easy to get running with help of the linaro tools.
