Use Unity-2D. If you don't like Unity, try Xubuntu or Lubuntu or Kubuntu.

This is simply not true. Sure, it now has paid services, but it is
still entirely free & entirely open-source except for some drivers and
codecs - the same as ever.

This is also not true and I am sure we would all like to know from
where you got this very damaging disinformation from, or what gave you
this negative impression.
