You are quite right; I was insufficiently precise. (Precise?
Geddit???!?!?!?!!?!)
It can choose between different 32-bit kernels; it cannot choose
between 32-bit or 64-bit.
I /believe/ that 12.04 will be the first version that will default to
PAE unless it's on a Celeron or some other chip that doesn't support
it. I have encountered several machines which cannot use PAE - it's a
significant snag. My own newest Thinkpad has a Pentium-M chip which I
don't think can do it, for instance, and it was not a cut-down or
economy version at the time.
