Passwords for the user account, and for samba shares (if that's what you're
using) can all be different. Typically, you have to set them individually.
I install Ubuntu on many computers that I use as servers, and I have never
seen a problem like this. Maybe you had the caps lock on during install?
Whatever the problem, it's not normal for Ubuntu.
I would try installing again. And it's always nice to have different ways to
access a machine like ssh, and vnc, and of course the console.
