Can't beat whatcha got there. That is a GREAT modem and I still have
mine. Here's the init string I used, BUT it slows down the modem to 14.4
due to lousy phone lines out here in the country and ancient hardware at
the cut-rate ISP.
AT&D2&C1X4V1Q0S7=70&B1&H1&R2s32=98~
You could make that s32=34 to go 28.8
It's the 56k part that blows up usually. Both sides have to support that
PERFECTLY or else it all fails in horrible ways. For text, 14.4 or 28.8
is perfectly acceptable.
Back in the day I used nothing but uugetty, which was just plain
computer-talk-to-modem. mgetty has other features, like fax, etc., that
were of no use for me. I had enough problems juggling 8 modems and 16
terminals at once. At night the squalling racket of modems put me to
sleep. Whanga whanga whang!
See if this helps

But, you do NOT need any sort of driver. I don't think you have to mess
with serial port speeds/protocol any more either. We used to have to
doctor those settings a well, ...back in the dark ages. It was almost a
mystical art form. :) Ric
