(2nd try) ubuntu 12.04LTS: sometime won't detect my iphone4s!

fdisk?  What command are you running?

It appears to be trying to attach it as a ethernet device.  What do
you see when it does connect ok?  I don't know about the iphone, can
it be used via the usb in different modes?  Maybe someone with more
detailed knowledge of the iphone can help.
