For the record, having now changed to a Netgear DG834G v4 the problem
has disappeared.  I presume that it was an issue with the v3.  In case
anyone is interested the v4 is much less sensitive to noise on the
line than the v3 (I am a long way from the exchange and am trying to
maximise the line speed) but they both connect at a noticably higher
rate than the Linksys.
